Patellar Luxation Surgery

Helping Pets with “Slipping Kneecaps”
Walk Comfortably Again

Patellar luxation—commonly called a “slipping kneecap”—is a painful orthopedic condition that can affect both dogs and cats. It occurs when the kneecap (patella) slips out of its normal position, causing lameness, discomfort, and long-term joint damage if untreated.

At Plaza Animal Hospital in Mooresville, Dr. Ellis offers advanced Medial Patellar Luxation (MPL) correction surgery to restore stability, reduce pain, and help pets live an active, healthy life.

What Is Patellar Luxation?

The patella normally glides smoothly in a groove at the end of the femur (thigh bone). In pets with patellar luxation, the groove is too shallow or the surrounding structures are misaligned, allowing the kneecap to slip in and out of place.

  • More common in small-breed dogs, but can occur in larger dogs and cats
  • Causes varying degrees of lameness, from mild skipping to severe, continuous limping
  • If untreated, may lead to arthritis and worsening mobility issues

Signs of Patellar Luxation in Pets

  • Intermittent limping or “skipping” on one hind leg
  • Sudden kicking or stretching of the leg during activity
  • Difficulty running, jumping, or climbing stairs
  • Consistent lameness in advanced cases
  • Pain or stiffness, especially after exercise

If your pet shows these signs, early diagnosis and treatment can prevent further damage and improve quality of life.

Our Surgical Approach

At Plaza Animal Hospital, we provide customized surgical solutions to meet your pet’s specific needs. MPL surgery may include:

  • Deepening the femoral groove to keep the patella in place
  • Tightening or releasing soft tissues around the knee for improved alignment
  • Realigning the tibial crest by repositioning bone to prevent future luxation

Dr. Ellis uses precise surgical techniques and high-quality equipment to give your pet the best chance of a successful outcome.

Recovery & Rehabilitation

Most pets recover well with proper post-operative care. Typical recovery includes:

  • Initial confinement and rest to allow healing
  • Pain management and anti-inflammatories for comfort
  • Gradual return to activity with controlled leash walks
  • Follow-up exams to monitor healing progress

Full recovery usually takes 8–12 weeks, after which many pets return to their normal, playful routines.

  • Compassionate, personalized care for every pet and family
